With its more than 3,700 full-time students, 470 employees, 160 international partner universities, its main subject areas – Economics and Law – and four departments, the School of Business, Economics and Law has unique breadth. The School’s close collaborations with the business sector and the public sector are also unique. The School of Business, Economics and Law holds EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA accreditations and is thus the only school of its kind in Sweden to hold Triple Crown accreditation.

The Department of Business Administration with over 160 employees of which 25 are employed doctoral students, is the largest department at the School of Business, Economics and Law. The Department consists of the sections Accounting, Marketing, Management and Organisation, and Industrial and Financial Economics and Logistics. We are one of the leading research departments in the country and our research has a strong tradition in empirically based research aiming for publications in well-recognized scientific journals.
We aim at recruiting 8-9 doctoral students within Business Administration, who will be employed on a fully financed PhD Studentship ("doktorandanställning"), with placement at the Department of Business Administration. Job assignments

An employed doctoral student will primarily devote themselves to their own postgraduate studies. A general study plan for doctoral studies in Business Administration is available at https://fek.handels.gu.se/utbildning/fek_studier_pa_forskarniva/antagning

The doctoral studentship is a fully financed full-time position. Departmental duties may not exceed 20% of full time distributed over the study period. The total length of employment may not exceed a period corresponding to four years of full-time postgraduate studies. A deduction is made for the period of study when the doctoral student has not been engaged in a doctoral studentship. Provisions pertaining to a doctoral studentship are found in Chapter 5, §§ 1-7 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Only those who are admitted or have already been admitted to postgraduate studies can be appointed a doctoral studentship.

The doctoral studentships concern postgraduate studies aimed at obtaining a doctoral degree in the postgraduate subject Business Administration.

Eligibility

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

General entry requirements for postgraduate studies requires the applicant to have:

  1. a degree awarded at the second-cycle level,
  2. obtained at least 240 credits from courses, of which at least 60 credits are from the second-cycle level, or
  3. acquired the equivalent knowledge by some other means, within or outside Sweden.

Specific entry requirements

Admission to postgraduate studies in Business Administration requires at least 90 credits in Business Administration, which includes a degree project of at least 15 credits or equivalent knowledge acquired by other means. Specific entry requirements are also met if the equivalent knowledge has essentially been acquired by other means within or outside Sweden.

Assessment

The selection of applicants who meets the general and specific entry requirements is based on the applicant's overall ability to benifit from the postgraduate studies.

The following criteria constitutes the basis of assessment applied in the selection:

  • The applicant’s documented knowledge within the subject area of relevance to the research area,
  • The applicant’s documented knowledge in academic theory and methodology,
  • The applicant’s analytical ability, as substantiated through an academic report, paper, degree thesis or corresponding work.

Admission and selection are conditional on the Department's resources to provide supervision within the doctoral student's research area.

Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in the Higher Education Ordinance SFS 1993:100. Only those who are admitted to third-cycle studies may be appointed to doctoral studentships. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primatily devote themselves to their studies. They may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration according to the regulations.

The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. The total employment period may not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle studies for four years.

Salaries for doctoral students are regulated in a local agreement at the University of Gothenburg.

Appointment procedure

The selected qualified applicants are called to an interview. A written assignment may be arranged.

The preliminary time frame for the interviews is in April.

A decision on admission to postgraduate studies is made by the Head of Department following a proposal by the Department’s Committee for Research and PhD Education. A decision will be made in June at the latest.
