Task description

In this Tenure Track position in Finance, the focus is on conducting new research that meets high international standards. The emphasis in research is on next generation financial services and technologies (Fintech). The research profile underlines the impact of financial innovations on obtaining funding and financial intermediation. The research profile covers also more broadly the impact of financial innovations and digitalisation on the change in financial markets. Changes have implications for the functioning of the financial market, financing of enterprises and individuals, payment transactions as well as for the revenue generation models of the financial sector companies.

The expertise and interests of the person to be selected for the position may be related but not limited to the following topics:

  • Innovative financial instruments and means of financial intermediation, such as blockchain technology, digital currencies and crowdfunding
  • Fintech companies and their impact on financial markets and the financial sector
  • Financing of innovations/start-ups
  • The potential of big data, data analytics and machine learning in funding and investment decisions and in the development of financial literacy
  • The role of financial markets in promoting conditions for the success of companies
  • The role of financial markets in coordinating innovations and corporate social responsibility
  • The change in financial markets: For example, the impact of new legislation and customer behaviour on the financial sector's competitive situation and profitability
  • The impact of digitalisation and innovations on payment transactions

We particularly appreciate the ability to produce research with social impact that delivers tangible benefits for business, financial markets and the finance sector. Multidisciplinary research is carried out together with researchers from both Finance and other fields of science.

The appointed person will in addition be expected to acquire external funding, deliver high-quality teaching and theses supervision, actively participate in activities in the scientific community and university administration as well as in creating societal impact. Duties in teaching and supervision are mainly connected to the Bachelor’s Programme in Accounting and Finance, EPAS-accredited Master’s Programme in Finance and the Doctoral Programme in Business Studies. The scope of responsibilities will be determined according to the career stage of the successful candidate. The annual working time is 1624 hours and tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan.

The Tenure Track position is located in the School of Accounting and Finance with a connection in research to the University’s research platform InnoLab. The School of Accounting and Finance is among Finland’s largest educational departments in business studies having education and research in four majors: Accounting, Business Law, Economics and Finance. InnoLab is a phenomenon-based, multidisciplinary open research platform with focus on open and user innovation, entrepreneurship, and public sector innovation and renewal.

Your profile and requirements

All applicants should have a doctorate degree as well as excellent academic merits and demonstrated potential for conducting outstanding research. We are particularly interested in applicants with multidisciplinary interests and strong records of, or potential for, excellence in teaching. Experience in obtaining research project funding as well as high-quality scientific publishing are both highlighted. Applicants will also be evaluated on the basis of relevancy and innovativeness of their preliminary research plan on how they would approach the phenomena related to the research platform from the point of view of their own research field.

Salary and benefits

The salary is based on the Finnish University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The gross monthly salary will be about 3,600-4,700 euros for an Assistant/Associate Professor. The salary depends on the job requirements and personal performance. An annual holiday bonus is paid to all employees in July. Each University of Vaasa employee automatically belongs to a pension scheme and the majority part of the pension contributions is paid by the employer.

The University’s Tenure Track procedure offers the recruited person an opportunity to advance to become a Professor of their discipline. The selected candidate can advance to the next career stage provided that he/she succeeds in the regular evaluations of the Tenure Track scheme. On the basis of the candidate’s experience and competence, he/she may be employed for a fixed term as Assistant Professor (2-5 years) or Associate Professor (3-5 years). A person fulfilling all qualification requirements and demonstrating particular merits may be appointed to the position of Professor on a permanent basis.
