1. About EM Normandie

In the space of just a few years, EM Normandie has managed to achieve a rapid transformation (approach, positioning and image, accreditations, internationalisation, ...) and has revived the entrepreneurial DNA behind the school’s creation.

At the end of this patiently constructed strategic plan, the school, which is accredited by EPAS, EQUIS and AACSB (the latter renewed for a period of 5 years in June 2019), now benefits from the transformative capital for further development and to enable it to move up the rankings, improve the quality of its recruitment, internationalise its courses, introduce new teaching and learning approaches and boost its research trajectory.

2. Job purpose and main duties

Reporting directly to the Dean of the faculty, the Director of Research is a member of the Executive Committee and the Regional University Community (ComuE). The post-holder will also run the school’s annual scientific council meeting.

Benefitting from the support of professors’ and assistants’ involvement in the school’s research projects and areas, the Director of Research will be expected to set up and develop a veritable research community within the school, and focus on increasing the scientific and academic impact as well as the reputation of the institution.

The main duties of the Director of Research are as follows (these duties provide a framework for the role and should not be regarded as a definitive list):

2.1 Draw up EM Normandie’s research strategy in collaboration with the Dean and pursuant to the institutional strategy under the leadership of the Managing Director.

2.2. Manage the development of research team members and their activities

  • Develop and manage the research dynamics of the faculty team by playing an active supporting role in elaborating research agendas (fixing three-yearly objectives), promoting professors’ scientific work, and stimulating their research and other intellectual output through coaching initiatives,
  • Provide the support required by professors along the production process through to publication (motivation, information, guidance…),
  • Embark non-publishing professors towards producing impactful output for the institution and to the benefit of target communities,
  • Oversee the impact of publications on the school’s key environments (accreditation bodies, companies, funders and partners, students, the academic world…),
  • Take part in the appraisal of professors (annual self-report and three-yearly formal interviews),
  • Participate in the recruitment of professors and visiting professors in line with the institution’s strategic requirements and selection criteria regarding qualifications,
  • Contribute to reviewing the infra- and pluri-annual systems supporting research output and innovation (incentive schemes, faculty management rules & regulations…),
  • When required, develop the structures supporting the leadership, management and organisation of research activities,
  • Reinforce the attraction and distinctive identity of the school’s research activities, in order to develop the notoriety of EM Normandie.
  • Encourage the creation of new Chairs and develop the sustainability of existing ones.

2.3. Develop a Total Quality Management approach to support the EM Normandie stakeholder experience (students, companies, partners, staff…)

  • Establish KPIs and management indicators relating to the quality of research, and plan / monitor accordingly,
  • In collaboration with the Heads of Academic Departments, contribute to strengthening the links between teaching and research,
  • Make an active contribution to national and international accreditation work, as well as to answering surveys required for rankings.

2.4. Develop a culture of innovation and collaboration within the faculty team

  • Develop projects to enable faculty members to make an effective contribution to the realization of the institutional strategy,
  • Embrace, share and spread a culture of innovation and performance to the benefit of stakeholders,
  • Build any bridges and relationships with companies, institutions and authorities that create an environment for the successful development of the school’s academic initiatives.

2.5. Contribute to the internationalisation of the School

  • Set up or consolidate the processes that reinforce the international dimension of research carried out by faculty members,
  • Participate in development plans and projects that contribute to the reputation and attraction of the EM Normandie brand at an international level.

3/ Person specification

Previous experience and essential qualifications

  • Educated to PhD / doctoral level, ideally qualified to supervise research (HDR) in the field of management (academic legitimacy with a major track record of publications at the very highest level),
  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both in French and in English.  Knowledge of a third foreign language would be appreciated,
  • Sound knowledge of higher education and research in general and of Business Schools in particular,
  • Very good understanding of public mechanisms (National Research Agency [ANR], European projects…) and private mechanisms (Chairs) for funding research,
  • Expert knowledge of academic journals, their expectations and operating mode,
  • Significant experience (10 years) of academic management (department, research faculty …),
  • Possess a national and international academic network,
  • Proven ability to lead and supervise from a managerial and management perspective (KPIs, budgets),
  • Excellent knowledge of international accreditation systems,
  • Expert knowledge of research software.
