Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professor in Accounting

Essex Business School

Essex Business School champions responsible management and sustainable business, and its mission is to offer a transformative education and research excellence that has a positive impact on business and society.

The Accounting Group at Essex Business School conducts world-class research around four key areas: accounting in emerging economies; sustainability, governance and gender; public sector accountability; and reporting, regulation and market-based accounting research. In particular, it has an international reputation in (i) critical, social and qualitative approaches to the study of accounting and (ii) an interdisciplinary perspective of accounting, with a strong emphasis on the study of accounting in emerging and developing economies and this is reflected in the work of our two centres, namely the Essex Accounting Centre (EAC) and the Centre for Accountability and Global Development (CAGD). The group is the leading research group nationally and internationally on research into accounting in emerging economies, an area that has become recognized as a significant field within much of accounting academia. In line with this, the group hosts the British Accounting and Finance Association’s (BAFA) special interest group on Accounting and Finance in Emerging Economies, its associated journal, the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies, and a very successful biennial international conference on Accounting and Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE); the second edition of which will be held at Essex Business School in June 2020. Over the last few years, the group has also built a very strong cluster which relies on quantitative methods and market-based perspectives in the context of both developed and developing countries, while also strengthening its public sector accounting research profile, being increasingly at the centre of the key international public sector accounting research networks and hosting the joint-editorship of  Financial Accountability & Management.

The Group is now looking to strengthen and expand its teaching and research activities, and seeks to make further appointments in any area of Accounting at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer, Reader or Professorial level. The start date for each post is expected to be 1 April 2020, though this can be discussed with you at interview.

Duties of the Role

The purpose of these posts is to enhance the School’s research profile and to both contribute to and lead in developing the field of Accounting; to develop and actively engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision; and to extend the School’s profile regionally, nationally and internationally through collaboration with other institutions.

Applicants at Lecturer level will contribute to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support; supervise student projects, fieldwork and placements; produce research outputs for publication at acceptable levels of volume and academic excellence; and undertake peer mentoring of colleagues on the request of the Dean.

Applicants at Senior Lecturer or Reader level will be expected to engage in curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level; provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Group; and undertake a senior leadership role within the department when required.

Applicants at Professor level will include providing strategic leadership in education; building up a sustained and effective record of impact at a strategic level in relation to teaching and learning; making a substantial contribution to the international profile of the University through the generation of internationally excellent research, scholarship and teaching; and pursuing research that is world leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.

At all levels you will be expected to engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity (resulting in internationally excellent publications) that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate significant external research income, appropriate to career stage and subject area norms.

A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the respective job packs.
