  • Champion the generation of high-quality research in the School.
  • Promote scholarly activities to grow the quantity and  quality of research output -to create a positive impact - on the image and reputation of the School while augmenting the quality of teaching.
  • Develop and execute a research strategy that aligns with the School’s vision, mission and objectives as well as that of the University.
  • Continually enhance a stimulating, collegial and well-governed environment that is conducive to intellectual growth and the development of research acumen amongst faculty.
  • Work with the Dean to identify, create and articulate a coherent Research strategy and vision for the School.
  • Facilitate the delivery of successful outcomes from research projects.  Effectively and efficiently manage the resources allocated to research to achieve the research objectives of the School.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Promoting and facilitating collaborative and inter-disciplinary research initiatives  aligned with the research strategy of the School and University.
  • Providing appropriate and sufficient support to faculty, research associates, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students to enhance research capacity and to take advantage of research opportunities.
  • Promoting research collaboration and developing networks within the school as well as nationally and internationally in both private and public sectors.
  • Actively establishing the development of institutional relationships with major scholarly journals to facilitate an increase in high quality scholarly output.
  • Acting as the nexus between the School and the business community to drive research initiatives that are mutually beneficial.
  • Facilitating the transfer of knowledge to faculty in the School and other internal and external stakeholders through seminars, workshops, lectures, conferences, websites and publications.
  • Facilitating the development of research identities for faculty, clustering faculty according to research themes and initiating appropriate research projects.
  • Actively support early career researchers to develop a research identity and find outlets for their research outputs.
  • Actively supporting researchers, centres and other entities in the pursuit of research funding for research projects.
  • Actively recruit and appoint suitably qualified international academics as Research Associates and Extraordinary Professors.
  • Develop and manage the research budget to support and deliver on the research strategy
  • Developing and maintaining strong linkages with internal stakeholders in the School through the following initiatives:
  1. Aiding in faculty and student recruitment and retention.
  2. Providing input into curriculum development and research oversight of Doctoral and specialised PGDip programmes .
  3. Ensuring that research informs the teaching activities of faculty.
  4. Presenting and facilitating a range of activities and initiatives to develop research capacity and grow research quality in the School.
  5. Communicating research-related opportunities to relevant stakeholders in the school.
  6. Advising faculty on research-related matters.
  7. Hosting local and international visiting faculty.
  • Participating in the day-to-day running of the School by:
  1. Chairing the Research Committee.
  2. Participating as committee member on various committees at School and University level.
  3. Preparing reports on the research activities of the School.
  4. Overseeing non-faculty where research is involved.
  5. Managing research associates.
  6. Managing the payment of research rewards.
  • Lecturing at least 90 hours per annum on various programmes at GIBS.
  • Publishing at least two peer reviewed article per annum.


Ideal Profile

  • A doctoral degree in a business/management related area relevant to a business school.
  • At least eight years of tertiary teaching experience of which five years must be at a post graduate level.
  • At least three years of academic management experience, especially in ranked business School.
  • Experience in the management of research projects.
  • At least ten publications in accredited journals with an average of at least one per year over the last five years.
  • Evidence of delivering presentations at local and international conferences.
  • A proven track record in supervising masters and doctoral students.
  • A proven track record in publishing in quality international journals
  • Experience in academic administration and management is an advantage.
  • An NRF rating is a strong recommendation.
  • Membership of local and international research or professional bodies is an advantage.
  • Evidence of community engagement is an advantage.


  • Extensive research experience with several years’ experience in a senior academic leadership role.
  • Strong track record of publications.
  • Strong international linkages.
  • Successful track record of academic leadership and team building.
  • Experience in cross disciplinary research initiatives and collaboration.
  • Well-developed understanding of the priorities, operation and strategy of funding bodies.
  • Experience in developing faculty.
  • Proven track record of developing early career researchers.
  • Experience in financial planning and resource allocation.
  • Experience in developing and executing a research strategy aligned with institutional priorities and objectives.
