HEC® Liège offers a dynamic and entrepreneurial research and teaching environment. Each professor conducts his or her research program independently. Numerous sources of funding (internal and external) exist and give (assistant) professors the opportunity to create their own research team and to supervise doctoral students as soon as they join HEC® Liège. Each professor is also responsible for the content and methodology of his or her teaching. The time allocation between the various activities is 40% for research, 40% for teaching and 20% for community service. In the early years of the appointment, the 20% of service is limited, which gives the professor the opportunity to further develop his or her research and teaching program.

Job description


The successful candidate will teach courses in the bachelor, master’s and doctoral programs. The initial teaching workload is defined in the school’s faculty management policy. The workload may evolve over time in function of the person’s profile and outputs. The course topics will include social and sustainable entrepreneurship but may also extend to broader topics such as entrepreneurship and innovation as well as research methods. The successful candidate will also contribute to managing the master’s specialization in « Social and sustainable enterprise management ».


The successful candidate will develop high-quality research on issues related to social entrepreneurship (and related themes such as social innovation and the social economy) and sustainable entrepreneurship (entrepreneurial projects oriented towards sustainability). (S)he will also participate in the research dynamics of the Centre for Social Economy and the « Social enterprise and business ethics » expertise domain. (S)he will collaborate with other domains of the school through the transversal collaboration dynamics in « Entrepreneurship » and « Sustainability ».

The succesful candidate will represent HEC Liège when interacting with the broader research community through attending and organizing conferences and workshops. (S)he will also supervise master theses and internships related to his/her areas of expertise.

Service to the community

The position implies participating in and contributing to the Centre for Social Economy, the « Social enterprise and business ethics » domain, the Management department and the school. The candidate will explore synergies with other partners within the University of Liège who are working on these topics.

Required qualifications and profile:

  • Have a PhD or will receive a PhD before the appointment in management or a related domain
  • Having a post-doctoral experience is an asset
  • Have published papers in high-quality academic journals (see the HEC Liège Academic Journal Guide & Academic Book Publishers) and have potential for future publications in collaboration with other scholars at HEC Liège
  • Participate in international research networks
  • Be capable of developing collective research projects, including research in collaboration with practitioners
  • Be fluent in English (writing and speaking)
  • Be able to understand French; full literacy is an asset
  • Be able to work in a team
  • Display a willingness for long-term commitment in the dynamics of the Centre for Social Economy

Tenure track candidates start with limited teaching duties allowing them to allocate 40% of their working time to research activities. A positive evaluation at the end of the 4-year probation period is subject to the candidate’s demonstrated performance in teaching and research.

In particular, with regard to research, the candidate is expected to

  • publish scientific articles in relevant and top-tier refereed economics and management journals, as well as books and book chapters (see HEC Liège Academic Journal Guide & Academic Book Publishers);
  • develop new research projects and write grant proposals for attracting internal and external research funding;
  • supervise doctoral research;
  • be involved in international research networks;
  • actively take part in the organization of research activities of the corresponding strategic field at HEC Liège, such as research seminars, workshops, and scientific conferences;
  • participate in research projects and missions for the account of, and grow partnerships with, private organizations and/or public authorities.

In addition, the candidate is expected to

  • deliver high quality teaching;
  • develop new and active teaching methods;
  • supervise Master theses;
  • contribute to the continuing evolution of the School’s teaching programs.

Academic posts are allocated for a fixed term of four years which may lead to a permanent appointment. In exceptional cases, an academic post may be allocated immediately on a permanent basis.
In the case of a four-year appointment, the person concerned will be assessed at the end of the third year.
If the outcome of the assessment is negative, the person concerned shall complete their four-year term with no possibility of an extension.
If the outcome of the assessment is positive, the person concerned will be appointed on a permanent basis.
