Context

Created in 1907, ESSEC is a leading business school with French roots and global outreach: two campuses in the Paris metropolitan area, one in Singapore, one in Morroco (Rabat), and one fully digital campus. ESSEC offers bachelor and graduate level training in business administration (GBBA, MSc, MBA, EMBA, Specialized Masters, PhD), which stand in top-tier of international rankings. ESSEC has a long tradition of exploring, teaching and researching how strategy and management may be mobilized to further the public good.

Over the past 10 years, ESSEC has been building up its teaching capacity and expertise in the area of geopolitics / international relations. Indeed, demand from students and the school’s various stakeholders is growing fast in this area, especially with a focus on transition & environmental issues, as sustainability has become central to the school strategy.

In this context, ESSEC is aiming to recruit a Professor of Management Practice. While they are not expected to publish research, Professors of Management Practice are experts in their field, have accumulated experience in various organizations beyond academia, and have a demonstrated teaching capability.

The new recruit will join the Private and Public Policy Department: it comprises about 15 faculty members, with expertise in Law, Negotiation, Geopolitics & International Relations, Urban Policy, Real Estate, Public Policy, Social Innovation and Philanthropy. Within the Department, s/he will join ESSEC’s Institute for Research and Education on Negotiation (IRENE). Established in 1996, IRENE is a resource centre in negotiation & conflict resolution, international relations & geopolitics, governance & defence issues. Beyond its research and publications activities, IRENE’s team delivers fieldwork activities and is regularly contracted by diplomatic academies, the European Commission or EEAS. It delivers trainings for more than 3.000 people a year in higher education institutions (ENA-INSP, Bruges, etc.), companies, and public organizations (EU, Foreign Affairs ministries & diplomatic academies, Defence ministry, etc.). IRENE has accomplished activities in 80+ countries as of today.

Mission

Based on the ESSEC Cergy Campus, nearby Paris, the recruit will join the Public and Private Policy academic department, and will work closely with IRENE to develop the following activities:

• Courses: Teach Geopolitics / International Relations / International governance of environmental issues to undergraduate (GBBA) and graduate students (Master in Management/Grande Ecole, Specialized Masters, GMBA) as well as Executive Education participants. These programs are being taught in French and English on our campuses in Cergy and Paris La Défense and will also be developed in Singapore and Rabat. The number of teaching hours is 240 hours/year.
• Pedagogical innovation: Develop pedagogical case studies, MOOCs and short videos, position papers, books and other relevant content for our courses and seminars. We also organize pedagogical events to mobilize students on IR and environment related projects.
• Community: organize seminars that include guest speakers, sit in academic juries, liaise with partner organizations, etc.

The recruit will be offered a permanent contract (CDI under French law), 4-day a week, renewable, with a competitive package.

Specifications / Requirements

Given the above-mentioned mission and job responsibilities, the job incumbent will need to demonstrate:

1. Significant professional experience in international relations, geopolitics, and/or environmental issues with a global approach;
2. Significant academic credentials: at least at the Masters degree, PhD/doctorate can be a plus;
3. Significant and successful experience in teaching activities, even on a part-time basis;
4. Capacity to teach in English, and at least reasonable command of French; capacity to teach in French is a plus;
5. Proven experience in project development and/or new pedagogical content creation is a plus.

Typical profiles could be people having acquired significant professional experience in a think tank, an NGO, an international public organization, a ministry of Foreign Affairs, etc.

Process

1. The position will be available from September 1, 2022; this can be discussed further.
