The HEC Digital Lab is the transdisciplinary centre of excellence, within HEC Liège, spearheading research & education in Digital Technologies. As part of its expansion, it is now looking for a PhD student to work for an industry-sponsored PhD research project. A description of the lab can be found below and online at www.digitallab.be.

JOB DESCRIPTION

HEC Liège in collaboration with a large private organization are offering fully-funded PhD position in the area of language models for cross-lingual and domain-specific applications.

This project offers ample opportunity for groundbreaking research. You can expect to work on exciting, new challenges, such as developing models for low-resource languages, dealing with sparse data, and training language models for very specific and constrained language registers.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to

  • Interact with a professional team of data scientists and engineers from the sponsoring organization and from the University.
  • Be exposed to real-life working environments and problems.
  • Interact with a young team of researchers in AI/NLP and other fields, such as Marketing, Finance and Law.
  • Attend international conferences and summer/doctoral schools.
  • Grow and evolve in a conducive, stimulating environment.

YOUR PROFILE

  • You have a strong Master’s degree in a field relevant to the project (computer science, commercial engineer, civil engineer)
  • You have a good understanding and practical experience with state-of-the-art methods in machine learning, NLP or other data science subfields
  • You have good communication skills and you are willing to regularly disseminate and publish research results
  • You have very good English written/spoken communication skills (fluency in French, German or Dutch is a strong asset for the position –especially for fieldwork)

CONTRACT

This is a full-time position. The PhD position is for four years (2 x 2 years). The salary will be set according to the doctoral researcher salary scale of the University of Liège, under grant holder status.
The candidate can start as early as October 2022, and no later than January 2023.
