Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Accounting

Essex Business School

Essex Business School champions responsible management and sustainable business, and its mission is to offer a transformative education and research excellence that has a positive impact on business and society.

The Accounting Group at Essex Business School has an international reputation in two largely overlapping lines of expertise in accounting research, namely (i) critical, social and qualitative approaches to the study of accounting and (ii) an interdisciplinary perspective of accounting, with a strong emphasis on the study of accounting in emerging and developing economies. In addition, there is an emerging cluster within the Group, which relies on quantitative methods and market-based perspectives in the context of both developed and developing countries. Within this context, the Group’s research concentrates on four broad themes, namely (i) sustainability, social responsibility and corporate governance;  (ii) (management) accounting change (in privatized, public and third sectors – social enterprises, NGOs); (iii) global development, corruption, accountability and gender; (iv) reporting, accounting regulation and market-based accounting research. The Group also founded the British Accounting and Finance Association’s (BAFA) special interest group on Accounting and Finance in Emerging Economies, edits the Journal of Accounting in Emerging Economies and more recently launched an international conference on Accounting and Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE).

The Group is now looking to strengthen and expand its teaching and research activities, and seeks to make further appointments in any area of Accounting at Lecturer or Senior Lecturer level. The start date for each post can be discussed with you at interview.

Duties of the Role

The purpose of this post is to enhance the School’s research profile and to both contribute to and lead in developing the field of Accounting; to develop and actively engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision; to extend the School’s profile regionally, nationally and internationally through collaboration with other institutions; and to contribute more widely to the School through service, administration and, where appropriate, informal leadership.

Applicants at the Lecturer level will contribute to excellence in education by designing and delivering substantive and effective teaching and learning support; supervise PhD student projects, fieldwork and placements; produce research outputs for publication at acceptable levels of volume and academic excellence; and undertake peer mentoring of colleagues on the request of the Dean.

Applicants at the Senior Lecturer level will be expected to engage in curriculum development, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, and research supervision at both an individual and a strategic level; provide research leadership and engage in activities that will enhance the research profile of the Group; and undertake a senior leadership role within the department when required.

At both levels you will be expected to engage in individual and/or collaborative research activity (resulting in internationally excellent publications) that is in keeping with REF criteria; and generate significant external research income, appropriate to career stage and subject area norms.

A full list of key responsibilities and main duties (Education, Research and Leadership and Citizenship) can be found within the Lecturer (ASER) and Senior Lecturer (ASER) job packs.
