The CERC Program was created to attract leading scholars who can positively contribute to Canada's global competitiveness and well-being, and to help Canadian institutions compete in the global market for research talent. The work of these leading researchers will spark the creation of new services and policies to support Canada's economic competitiveness, help sustain the environment, and improve quality of life.

The specific objectives of the program are to:

  • help Canada build a critical mass of expertise in priority areas identified by the government;
  • create a competitive environment to help Canadian institutions attract a cadre of world-leading researchers in their pursuit of excellence in their research;
  • contribute to the branding of Canada as a location of choice for world-leading research, science and technology development along with other federal programs with similar objectives.

Candidates will have an outstanding track record of funded research and publications in one of these areas of research:

Accordingly, it is equally committed to complying with federal equity and non-discrimination initiatives related to employment. UQTR has endorsed the Dimensions Charter as an engagement toward research excellence, innovation and creativity across all disciplines, through greater equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). Thereby, it particularly encourages applications from women, members of Indigenous communities, members of visible or ethnic minorities, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from LGBTQ+ communities. Upon request, the recruitment process can be modified to consider the needs of individual with disabilities.UQTR has signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) as an institutional engagement to improve the ways in which the output of scientific research is evaluated. More weight will be given to alternative criteria such as the scientific content of a paper rather than publication metrics, and a wider range of impact measures will be used to assess the outcomes of the work, such as their influence on policies and practices.Internal selection processEach application will first be evaluated by a committee responsible for identifying candidates who satisfy the selection criteria of the University and of the Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program. Applications which proceed to the next step will be reviewed by a committee which ensures that the University’s guidelines and objectives related to equity, diversity, and inclusion have been considered. Because the creation of this position is subject to approval by the University, candidates must also go through a departmental hiring process. The successful candidate will be invited to submit a full application package to the Canada Excellence Research Chair Program by mid-October 2022 and, if awarded, will be offered a tenure-track professorship.
