THE UNIVERSITY OF FIJI - A dynamic and evolving higher education institution is seeking applications and/or nominations for the position of Vice-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor shall be a visionary leader and be responsible for the academic, financial, and administrative welfare of the University.

Under the overall direction of the University Council and the supervision of the Pro-Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor will be the person:

  • providing strategic direction to the University;
  • driving academic excellence at the University;
  • effectively managing the University’s human resources, upholding human values, ethical standards and engendering trust.
  • building physical and financial resources in collaboration with relevant Council Commitiees.
  • seeking international funding and endowments.

Roles and Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of the Vice-Chancellor, amongst other things, are:

Academic Leadership

  • The development/advancement and delivery of high quality, internationally comparable academic and research programmes;
  • Achieving excellence in the core areas of teaching and student learning, research, and service to the community.

Strategic Leadership

  • Provision of management leadership on all matters of institutional policy, strategic planning, implementation of Strategic Plan, and reporting to the Council and institutional enhancement including staff and students’ affairs.

Financial Management

  • The overall responsibility for maintaining and promoting financial sustainability and good governance of the University inclusive of seeking financial resources.

Liaison

  • Responsibility for building congenial relation with the government, the Non-Governmental Organisations, bilateral and multilateral agencies and international organisations/communities and local education stakeholders.

The Person

The Vice-Chancellor should have a proven record of:

  • Strong and successful academic leadership;
  • Management experience in a senior position at a reputable university or equivalent institutions;
  • Strong operational ability to ensure successful delivery of goals and plans;
  • An understanding of public policy making in Fiji and in the higher education sector locally and internationally;
  • A high level of financial and managerial competence;
  • Excellent leadership skills;
  • Ability to work closely with the Council and diverse groups of University stakeholders;
  • Understanding of the concerns of the communities for which the University was set up to address;
  • The ability to deliver a high-quality performance in all circumstances.
  • The ability to deal with all staffing and student issues in a just and fair manner.

The Vice-Chancellor would in addition, have a strong local and or international profile of:

  • Teaching at a university or an equivalent institution;
  • Research and publications and possess a PhD.
  • High level of intellectual ability and personal integrity.
  • Upholding the vision of shared responsibility.

Special Condition

The Vice-Chancellor is to uphold the values and policies of the Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji - the Founder of the University, applicable to the University.
