Associate Professor of Tourism Business

Role and salary

As our new Associate Professor of Tourism Business, you will be working in the Business School at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies, more specifically by the specialisation of tourism marketing and management. The Business School of the University of Eastern Finland operates on both the Kuopio and Joensuu campuses. The position will be located on the Joensuu Campus.

The specialisation of tourism marketing and management offers education in the tourism and hospitality sector’s international marketing, as well as in the management of tourism destinations and tourism companies. The key themes of the specialisation include responsibility, digital business, well-being and nature tourism. The language of instruction is English. Research in the specialisation is linked to research carried out within the Forests and Bioeconomy, and the Sustainable Co-management of Water Resources and Aquatic Environments research communities of the University of Eastern Finland. The Associate Professor is expected to be specialised in research and education in tourism business.

Your main responsibilities are:

  • to conduct and promote research into tourism business in accordance with the research group’s strategy, and to participate in other activities of the Business School,
  • teaching and supervision in tourism business may pertain to all levels of academic education
  • to actively participate in project activities, in the acquisition of national and international research funding, and in international research networks.

The position is sought to be filled for a fixed term of four years as from 1 January 2022. The position is filled for a fixed term due to it being a Tenure Track position. A trial period is applied to new members of the university's staff.

External expert review will be used in the filling of the position. After the experts have submitted their statements, the Appointments Committee preparing the recruitment will interview the applicant.

In the currently vacant position, the Tenure Track can be entered from the Associate Professor level onwards. At the end of the term, the merits of the person will be evaluated to determine whether they can proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track, i.e., be appointed as a Professor without public notice of vacancy. The criteria, objectives and results to be achieved during the term in order to proceed to the next level of the Tenure Track will be agreed in detail with the appointee when signing the contract of employment.

The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of the Finnish universities. The salary comprises two components: a job requirement component and a personal performance component. In this position, the job requirement component is 4.033,80 euros/month, based on level 7 of the job requirement chart for teaching and research staff. The personal performance component can be a maximum of 50 % of the above-mentioned sum.

Our requirements and expectations


  • a suitable doctoral degree, good teaching skills and prerequisites to fulfil the qualification requirements of a Professor by the end of the Tenure Track term,
  • demonstrated achievements in research addressing development of tourism services business especially in the context of nature and wellness tourism,
  • diverse skills in qualitative research methods,
  • experience in university-level teaching and supervision,
  • experience in working in research and development projects. When assessing an applicant's achievements in research, special emphasis will be placed on publications, especially those published in the field’s international peer-reviewed journals and compilations, as well as on the applicant's international research collaboration, experience in leading research, and previous success in securing research funding.
  • fluency in the English language and capability to supervise students and give teaching in English.


  • experience in expert roles in the field of tourism,
  • proficiency in the Finnish language.
